Even as recent Medicaid changes create new gaps in health insurance coverage, FAMLI helps weather medical crises without losing a paycheck.
Headlines about health insurance rate hikes, hospital closures, and government spending cuts have many Coloradans wondering whether health care will be there when they need it, and whether they can afford it.
We know that when health coverage shrinks, families often end up delaying care, dipping into savings, or taking on debt. We also know that for caregivers, that strain is especially compounded — and makes stable, dependable paid leave matter more than ever.
That’s why the FAMLI Division is doing its part to protect affordability.
First: starting in 2026, we’re lowering premiums to .88% of wages.
Paid leave is meant to be something families can rely on without added financial strain. And for FAMLI to be stable, it has to be affordable. By lowering premiums, we’re making sure workers keep more of their paycheck every month if they need to care for a new child, support an aging parent, or recover from a serious illness.
Second: starting in January 2026, FAMLI will launch the nation’s first Neonatal Care Leave, giving parents of newborns receiving critical care in a hospital up to 12 additional weeks of paid time off.
Without paid leave, families in this situation often face an impossible choice: returning to work immediately to keep a paycheck, or staying by their newborn’s side and falling behind on bills. Neonatal Care Leave will ensure Colorado parents don’t have to ever make that choice again.
